Let’s take a moment an explore those teaching methods.

What is Implementation Science?

Have you ever heard of implementation science before?

Implementation Science is a field of study that emerged due to the underutilization of evidence-based practice, or EBP. There is a gap between what we know and what we do that’s referred to as “The Know-Do Gap”. By identifying and addressing the resultant Know-Do Gaps at the provider, clinic, or healthcare system level we’re able to increase the uptake of proven health interventions. Because of these gaps, we’re only now beginning to utilize research that was conducted in 2004. That means on average it takes 17 years for information to be transferred from research into everyday clinical practice… 17 years. There are estimates that 1 out of every 3 patients do not receive care that complies with current scientific evidence. This is something that we all see in our practices, theories that have been thoroughly debunked, are still being utilized. This means that despite decades-long efforts to teach patient safety, improve quality, and identify best practices, Our industry is lacking in the dissemination of such programs.

Research has found that personal beliefs, behaviors, and values of people involved in implementing reforms can affect the quality of implementation and, therefore, the outcomes. The whole “I’ve been doing this for 20 years. I know what I’m doing.” can be a real barrier for bringing in new ideas and concepts.

Across the country there a various sized gaps, some quite large, and it’s the reason that Jess and Hillary are fascinated with Implementation Science. That’s why they’re going to be actively utilizing these theories through the courses.

How are we going to make these changes? This is where I finally get around to answering your question Jess. We’re going to use something called Person-Centered Instruction to help you identify ways in which we can shrink, or even eliminate, the “Know-Do Gap”.

How is Evolutionary Education Solutions going to make these changes?

In order to identify ways in which we can all shrink, or even eliminate, the “Know-Do Gap” we’ll be using a type of instruction that is focused on maximizing the student’s uptake of new information rather than focusing on the instructor’s ease of teaching as happens in the traditional or “sage on a stage” instructional format. This type of teaching is called Person-Centered Instruction.

How we’ll use Person-Centered Instruction with this course

Research from David N. Aspy and Flora N. Roebuck has shown that universities with Person-Centered Instruction attain higher rates of retention and learning. Therefore, we want to incorporate it here with you so that you walk away with as much of the information that we cover still stuck in your head.

We’re going to explain all of our information in ways that are personally relevant to each of you in order to improve the implementation of the knowledge and skills you’ll gain in this course.

And you’ll get learning support too. We’ll follow the principles of implementation science whenever we present any information to you.

Three Learning Styles

In order for you to learn best, we’re going to accommodate a variety of learning styles in this course.

Learning styles indicate the way a person learns best and are highly dependent on an individual’s personality. At the start of any educational experience, being mindful and aware of your personal learning style is tremendously valuable. Seeking courses that fit your learning style will improve the amount of information you retain from that course.

The three most common learning styles are Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learning. Although we all tend to have one strongest style, each of us usually has a secondary learning style which can complement the primary learning style and improve the efficiency of learning when you combine them in the right way.

We’ll utilize these to maximize the amount of information that you absorb.

Hillary Cooper, M.A., CCC-SLP

Hillary Cooper, M.A., CCC-SLP

Hillary got her start in speech-language pathology in an outpatient private practice in Leesville, Louisiana, which served active duty soldiers, their dependents, and military retirees.  The wide range of experience she gained in that position served her well when she moved to Ruston to marry her soulmate.  She has since worked in long term care facilities, acute care, and home health.  In 2016, Hillary decided that she wanted to set out to change the status quo of dysphagia treatment in North Louisiana, so she started her own outpatient private practice and then created North Louisiana Swallow Solutions to be the premier mobile FEES provider in the region.  Because of her need for an artistic outlet, Hillary created an online gift shop called SLPstuff.com, which donated a portion of every sale to speech-language pathology related charitable organizations.  And because of her strong need to give back to a world that has given her so much, Hillary co-founded The Dysphagia Outreach Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide meaningful assistance to individuals affected by dysphagia.  In 2020 Hillary joined forces with Jessica Lasky and Michael Kurtz to establish Evolutionary Education Solutions, an ASHA approved CEU Provider to bring high quality dysphagia education to speech-language pathologists around the country.  In her free time, Hillary enjoys teaching and travels around the country providing high-quality lectures to medical speech-language pathologists. A chronic overachiever, Hillary has earned multiple ASHA Ace awards for going above and beyond the standard requirements for continuing education.
